More Steve Hass stuff

Hey Y'all!
HASS is playing at NYC's Blue Note all next week with Janis Siegel. The band is amazing. John Pattitucci(2nites), Will Lee(2nites), Gill Goldstien on piano and a few other notables.
Anyone from the NYC area on this board?
Also, word of a Wayne Krantz bootleg with HASS and Anthony Jackson.

what a great board! great things happen when you do internet searches. I just went to a Steve Hass clinic as the Jazz School in Berkeley yesterday. I also saw him last night at Yoshi's with Janis Seigel. Different band though. Darek Oles on bass, Alan Pasqua on Piano, and Wayne Johnson on guitar.
Steve's playing behind a vocalist is amongst the best and most creative I've seen. Everything from blowing at whisper to very creative drum parts using shakers and different items to dampen the drums, even playing with his fingers.
On a different note, being that i saw 2 thirds of Erskine's trio playing with Janis, is Ersko still with Krall? Why wasn't he featured in MD's "drummers of Diana Krall". In my opinion that's the hippest choice she ever made.
I love Jeff Hamilton and Lewis Nash, but they're just recyclers. Ersko is a creator.
Is it me or is Modern Drummer just out of touch. Does anyone else feel MD is just the same old gadd, weckl, and rock guy's over and over? You barely hear about TODAY's creative and most working drummers.

I can't wait to see The Blue Note show. My dad has played on a couple of Manhattan Transfer recordings. Steve's on the last one coming out this fall. Janis is a great singer and that's an all star band! Welcome, and thanks DP.

I'll see you there Sara. I agree DP, MD is sucking especially during the last 5/6 years. They seem to slipped. All the young players making a difference aren't in there. Ari Hoenig, Steve Hass, Cliff Almond, Dafnis. Kieth Carlock got in due to Steely Dan, but that was way late. He was doing Krantz for close to 6 years before MD gave him anything.

Yes, if that's true [I haven't renewed my 'script since the early 90's, & i only buy it very un-occasionally now], then it is unfortunate that the most famous, popular, & longest-running mag devoted to the art form is relgated to 'who's cover shot sells the most'...even 'back in the day' they used to give smaller but still decent articles on up-&-coming talent...I even remember Weckl being covered in the 'up-&-coming' section of the Peart cover '84 ish, kinda funny & ironic when you look back, cuz DW should've been on the cover w NP in a smaller article [img]wink.gif[/img] ...but that's just the 'sequence/chain of events/timeline' thing for ya.
MD MUST have SOMETHING on all those cats you mentioned, ESP a player like Hass, Almond, Cruz, etc[?!!]... [img]eek.gif[/img]

i didn't read all of Robs post. Why wasn't Ersko in there? I bought some vintage MD's where Weckl was in little tiny Sabian ads. Dvid Weckl Switched. Yeah...endorsements are such bullshit. Yeah Dave switched to get free cymbals cause Z didn't care...he then blew up and Z kissed his ass so he left sabian. He then realized he's so great and he should have his own cymbal line. Z doesn't do signature lines, because the have dignity in their work. So then he switched BACK. Same with Peart. It's not about sound. It's about $$ and ego.
Anyhow, DRUM! is the better publication or check out drumscene from Australia. MD sucks.
